Hiring a senior leader in Latin America: a country guide

For companies hiring a country manager, director or C-level executive in Latin America from abroad: what to settle before the search, what each country adds to the offer by law, and how a search runs. Every legal fact links to the official text it comes from.

T-mapp is an executive search firm for mid-management, senior, director and C-level positions, working from Bogotá, Madrid and Los Angeles, with experience running searches in more than 20 countries. It works with T-mapp's Smart Search, its proprietary methodology, through a six-stage process from understanding to retention.

Five decisions to settle before the search starts

  1. Who owns the role. Who at headquarters, in the region and in the country interviews, decides and manages the hire, and what success in the first year looks like.
  2. How you will employ the person. A local entity, an existing subsidiary or an employer of record: decide before the offer, because it changes the contract and who signs it.
  3. The offer in local terms. Base, each country's statutory payments (below), variable pay and benefits. In most countries the annual cost is not twelve times the monthly salary.
  4. The working language. Which language the role uses every day with headquarters, and which with the local team.
  5. Location and mobility. Where the person must live, how much they travel, and whether relocation is on the table.

What each country adds to the offer by law

How a search runs from abroad, stage by stage

T-mapp's method, Executive Search: from understanding to retention, is guided by T-mapp's Smart Search:

  1. Understanding. We learn the business context, define the profile and align expectations: what is a must-have, what is a nice-to-have and what success in the role looks like.
  2. Direction. We read the market: target industries and companies, equivalent roles and career paths, talent mapping and the search and approach strategy.
  3. Quality. Direct search for active and passive talent, with a professional and confidential approach.
  4. Conversion. We coordinate interviews, prepare candidates and clients, manage expectations and bring you market feedback in every round.
  5. Hiring. We build and present the offer, support the negotiation through to acceptance and coordinate onboarding..
  6. Retention. We follow up after the start date, at 3 and 6 months, measure satisfaction and spot risks early..

In Quality: a first shortlist of at least four assessed and aligned profiles within eight business days of brief approval.

Questions

Can T-mapp run a search in a country where it has no office?

Yes. T-mapp works from Bogotá, Madrid and Los Angeles and has experience running searches in more than 20 countries. In the Direction stage we map the target market in the country where the leader will work: industries, companies and equivalent career paths.

What should a foreign company budget beyond base salary?

Most Latin American countries add statutory payments to base pay, such as a thirteenth-month salary or extra bonuses, and set a minimum paid vacation. This guide summarizes them country by country, each linked to the official law text. The salary study (step 2 of T-mapp's method) builds the offer in local terms from the start. This is not legal advice.

How long until we see candidates?

In the Quality stage of T-mapp's method you receive a first shortlist of at least four assessed and aligned profiles within eight business days of brief approval.

How are T-mapp's fees set?

We work with flexible models — success-based, retained or milestone-based — set by role level, complexity, geography and scope of each search. The detail goes in each search proposal.
